The Centre has launched the Jaldoot app to monitor groundwater levels across the country

The Union Ministry of State for Rural Development and Steel launched a dedicated JALDOOT App and e-brochure on Tuesday.

The Union Ministry of State for Rural Development and Steel launched a dedicated JALDOOT App and e-brochure on Tuesday. Introduced with the goal of centralizing data on groundwater levels across the country. Jaldoots, have been assigned to measure open wells in each village twice a year.

“Despite initiatives to promote watershed development, afforestation, waterbody development and renovation, and rainwater harvesting, groundwater levels in various parts of the country have depleted.
“This app will aid in the observation of water tables across the country. Hence, the resulting data can be used for Gram Panchayat Development Plans and Mahatma Gandhi NREGA Plans,” said union minister Faggan Singh.

Launching of Jaldoot App

According to the ministry, Jaldoots will manually measure the water levels in 2-3 wells in every village. Then they will upload geo-tagged images to the app. It will work in both online and offline modes. Moreover, data stored on mobile devices will synchronize with the app whenever they enter a connectivity area.

The ministry also stated that the JALDOOT website includes water level, monsoon, and registered user reports. Jaldoots’ data will combine into the Nation Water Informatics Centre’s (NWIC) database for analysis and the benefit of various stakeholders.
The Union Ministry of Rural Development and the Panchayati Raj together created the app. Every year, from May 1 to October 31, manual water level measurements will take place.

Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, Union Minister of State for Rural Development, Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution, and Kapil Moreshwar Patil, Union Minister of State for Panchayati Raj, were among those present at the launch event.
